With “Bad Boys for Life” on the way to the second best MLK weekend ever, a Fourquel shouldn’t come as a surprise.

“Bad Boys for Life”, the third title of the 25-year franchise with Will Smith and Martin Lawrence, will start with a strong $ 68.4 million, making it the second-best MLK weekend of all after “American” 2014 Times Sniper ”($ 107.2 million). So it should come as no surprise that Sony Pictures is planning a fourth film.

Chris Bremner, writer of Bad Boys for Life, who wrote the script with Peter Craig and Joe Carnahan, will return and write the Fourquel.

No details about what story the fourth film will tell, although the open end of the third film was far from suggesting that the franchise would go on.

Directed by Adil El Arbi and Bilall Fallah (instead of Michael Bay, who directed the first two), “Bad Boys for Life” will be followed by detectives Mike Lowrey (Smith) and Marcus Burnett (Lawrence), who will meet again solve a number of murders. All of these crimes are linked by an old case in which Lowrey was involved and which endangered his life.

The film was in developing hell for over a decade, with various authors and directors. Production finally ended in October 2018. Filming took place in Atlanta and Miami in the first half of 2019.

The film, which opened on January 17, 2020, features Vanessa Hudgens, Alexander Ludwig, Charles Melton, Paola Núñez, Kate del Castillo, Nicky Jam and a returning Joe Pantoliano as chief of police.

The Threequel is also the best opening event for the action buddy cop franchise. It surpasses the 2003 opening weekend with “Bad Boys II” ($ 46.5 million) and “Bad Boys” ($ 15.5 million).

With a budget of $ 90 million, it is the second most expensive film in the franchise segment to lead the trilogy at the box office. Bad Boys earned $ 141 million worldwide with a budget of $ 19 million. And “Bad Boys II” had worldwide sales of $ 270 million with a budget of $ 130 million.

The ratings for “Bad Boys for Life” were mostly positive, with a 75 percent rating for “Rotten Tomatoes”. Leading IndieWire film critic David Ehrlich called it a “fun, explosive, and even thoughtful action film that updates Jerry Bruckheimer’s bombast for the modern age of multiplex cinema”.

Will Smith and Martin Lawrence are expected to return for the Fourquel, but have no idea if Directors Adil El Arbi and Bilall Fallah will do the same.

The film franchise even spawned a television series starring Gabrielle Union alongside Jessica Alba in the second episode, which aired on Spectrum in 2019 and was extended for a second season, premiering in 2020.
